Team Meat, the developers behind one of last year's biggest indie hits, has revealed that it's working on a new project that's more "ambitious" and "experimental" than its debut title, Super Meat Boy.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Team Meat Co-founder, Edmund McMillen commented, "I think it's safe to say that Meat Boy was a very straightforward game. We didn't really reach outside the box in terms of design. I think with the new game we definitely get a bit more experimental with the design."
"I think it's going to be more ambitious design-wise and it's going to be more of a challenge for us," he added. "It's a bigger project. It's going to be fun and that's exactly why we're into it. It's going to be pretty fresh."
Colour us excited and intrigued. Super Meat Boy was one of the best games of last year as far as we're concerned, and second only to Limbo in the indie breakthrough category. McMillen went on to talk about the possibility of SMB coming to other platforms beyond the XBLA and Steam platforms it's currently available for.
It seems a Mac version is still in the works, although McMillen is struggling to find the motivation to go back to the SMB code and re-jig it for Macs when he's got the lure of a new project to work on instead.
Team Meat were also approved as 3DS developers earlier this year, although they remain without a dev kit at this point. While the developers had considered porting SMB to Nintendo's new handheld, the lure of a new project is once again putting those considerations on the backburner.
"We were originally kind of into porting Meat Boy to it, but the game we're working on now is very exciting and it probably won't work on the 3DS. I don't know if it will or not, or if it would be a good idea for it," said McMillen.
"We're going to approach the next game in the same way we did Meat Boy," he added. "We're just going to make a game and if it works on whatever system it works on then good, but we're not designing this game with a specific system in mind."
