AX360 Surround Sound Headset

While there are plenty of 3rd party gaming headsets there are surprisingly few surround sound ones, even fewer with a mic for online gaming, and none that can even hold a candle to Tritton's Audio Xtreme 360 (AX360) surround sound gaming headset. I never thought I would be this impressed with a headset. But as a guy who has to keep the volume down to appease the neighbors, this is a godsend. With only one minor design issue, no mute for the mic, this is nearly a perfect headset for PC and console gamers. For the uninitiated, Dolby 5.1 surround sound uses two front, two rear, one center and one sub woofer (that's the .1 in 5.1) to create an audio experience superior to stereo not only in sound, but effect. Everyone loves to throw in the Juraassic Park DVD to show off their surround sound, as it features the sounds of dinosaurs surrounding you, and making small children cry. For gamers, there have been three major obstacles to bringing surround sound to the masses: price, headsets, and disruption. The Tritton AX360 surround sound gaming headset brings a near perfect solution to console cowboys and PC generals alike.

Sure, everyone loves home theaters, and surround sound movies are grand, but surround sound gaming is an experience like none other. From bullets whizzing by to actually hearing where an enemy is before you see them brings the whole experience to life. Unfortunately surround sound systems are expensive, difficult to set up, tend to bug the poor downstairs neighbor, and can interfere with voice chat in online games. The AX60 is a solid piece of hardware that is easy on the wallet and those around you.

As a certified Dolby Digital 5.1 headset, you know you are going to get great sound quality, and the AX360 delivers. It is unreal how the drivers in the headset create a real sense of space. By tweaking the delay settings, you get even more effect. The bass, as is the case with most headphones, is mediocre, but the rumble effect not only adds to game play, but since it is timed to the bass, it enhances its effect as well. The headset comes with skimpy instructions, but a generous collection of connectors and cables are included.

The only weaknesses are the lack of a mute button for the boom mic, and no bluetooth support, which is a shame for PS3 gamers. Otherwise, this is the headset every gamer needs, for convenience and quality.
