Similarly to its predecessor, Nintendo's Wii U will not support leading formats for visual media playback such as DVD and Blu-ray, Satoru Iwata has confirmed.
"Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities," said the company's President in a generic Q&A for investors.
"The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies," Iwata continued.
Instead, the Wii U will utilise high-density optical discs as the storage solution for its games. The Wii also used optical discs as opposed to the patented DVD and Blu-ray drives favoured by Microsoft and Sony respectively.
