Team Fortress 2 Goes Free-To-Play News

The gaming press at large had been predicting it ever since Valve opened up Steam to free-to-play games a couple of weeks ago, but now the Kirkland, Washington-based developer has confirmed that Team Fortress 2 has gone free-to-play.

TF2 had previously been incredibly good value over Steam anyway, either with the Orange Box at £14.99 or by itself for £6.99, but this transition to free-to-play now makes it an offer no gamer can refuse if they're yet to give the superb shooter a go.

Valve has now implemented a micro-transaction model into the game where players can pay for in-game items such as weapon kits for each class, although the option to play without these paid-for perks remains open for those gamers with lint-filled wallets.

The FPS genre is yet to offer a truly compelling free-to-play game from a big name IP, with the likes of EA's Battlefield Play4Free merely offering a rehashed version of Battlefield 2, so Valve has certainly placed itself towards the front of the 'F2P' pack with Team Fortress 2.

It was all introduced in an 'Uber Update' for the game yesterday, which is the largest of over 200 updates that have been released for the game since it launched in 2007. Alongside this, Valve has also released a 'Meet the Medic' trailer, the latest in its series of animated shorts for the game...
