"Mortal Kombat"

 Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition

© Warner Bros. There were a good many of us who thought the purchase of Midway's "Mortal Kombat" meant a "Fatality" for the gory franchise. Midway went belly up, and WB picked up the broken pieces. We all worried that WB wouldn't be able to deliver on a serious "Mortal Kombat" game, heck even the past few Midway ones were weak entries. We thought our beloved ESRB creating, blood spurting, fatality-fest was over. We were wrong.

Not only did Warner Bros. produce a new "Mortal Kombat," it went back to the classic formula. "Mortal Kombat" features 2D gameplay (thank gawd!), lots of characters, and lots and lots of blood and gore. In a sense though, it's schlocky and fun violence, more "Army of Darkness" than "Saw." While the actual number of occurrences of graphic violence surely outpaces "Manhunt" it simply feels more fun. And there's a good reason, violence in "Mortal Kombat" is about mocking your opponent. Think of it as gory trash-talking.

One simply cannot understate the success of the new "Mortal Kombat." "Super Street Fighter 4" has sold 1.6 million units. "Marvel vs. Capcom 3" has sold 2 million units. "Mortal Kombat," which has been out for less time than either game, has already sold just shy of 3 million units. This one game alone has already paid for the acquisition of Midway by Warner Bros.

So what made the game great? Well there are the obvious facts: it was a good looking game, especially in 3D, it received critical praise, and it was well supported by collector's editions, including a tournament edition with an incredible game stick. But what really made it fly off shelves? Easily accessible, highly satisfying local multiplayer.

Perhaps more than any other company, Warner Bros. understands the value of playing together. All one has to do is look at the Lego games, they are designed to be played with a friend sitting next to you, and they are very fun. While most of the industry seems to think co-op and multiplayer means "online" they are neglecting the fact that games are social, especially local.

From the couch, to the big 55" HDTVs we've set up entire rooms to sit in front of our gaming machines with other people. But it's not just about being local, all one has to do is play "Resistance 2" co-op to know that pretty and local aren't enough.

Accessibility and satisfying rewards are key. Sure you can get good at "Mortal Kombat." But let's be honest, if you're going to pour over the charts and get really good at a fighter, you're going to pick a Capcom game, like "Street Fighter 4." The game is designed for the hardcore fighter.

"Mortal Kombat" has never been a big tournament game. It has never been as tightly balanced nor as nuanced. However that's not the point. It's fun. By fun we mean competitive mixed with clear declarations of success. When you pull off a move in "Mortal Kombat" even a simple upper-cut, it's rewarding. The sounds, the exaggerated animation, the blood... they all combine in a way that makes you want to rib your neighbor and shout out "in-your-face."

One only has to look at the new "X-ray" moves. While all characters have special moves, the "X-ray" ones are spectacular to see. The game pauses and you see your character break the bones of an opponent, as if it were an "X-ray." To pull of the move you simply fight, your bar will fill with both damage dealt, taken, and blocked. Then you hit the same three buttons for every character, and unless you miss or it's blocked, you are treated to a standing ovation worthy, humiliating animated experience.

You see, that's the secret sauce in "Mortal Kombat." Even beginners can pull of the "X-ray" moves. Yet advanced players can pull of tricky combos. In a Capcom game a noob is always toast. But in flag football, even if you've never played, you'll find yourself doing something amazing, something worth celebrating.

"Mortal Kombat" is the flag football of fighting games. If you're skilled, you'll still dominate, but every dog will have his day and pull off at least one great, brag-worthy move. And, like flag football, taunting and teasing feels much better face to face than over a blue-tooth headset.

Watching sports with a friend on the phone isn't the same as having them over for the game. Watching a movie with a date on the cell isn't the same as having him or her on the couch. Playing a competitive game, especially one with short session durations, isn't the same as playing next to someone.

I love online multiplayer games. Genres that require heavy investment, such as MMOs and serious FPS games like "Black Ops" make sense and play better online. Sports sims tend to go both ways, depending on the desired experience. But so many games, esp. co-op and short sessions games like racing and fighting are incredible locally. Yet many game developers ignore local for online, or provide a weaker local experience.

So let "Mortal Kombat" act as a case study. Folks are hungry for local, accessible, satisfying competitive experience, and developers may want to consider providing more experiences to cater to them. The arcade is in the living room, perhaps even more than online.

"Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition" Review (PS3)

"Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition" returns to its 2D roots and delivers the most balanced, violent, and fun version of the game to date. The game has its fair share of flaws, especially in the story mode, but none of them are show stopping fatalities.

The game is more like the arcade fighters of yesteryear, but even better thanks to the best fighting stick ever to grace a living room. Once again, fighting is fun thanks to "Mortal Kombat."

"Mortal Kombat" in 2D, who knew it'd be such a relief? Fighting games just work better in 2D, (playing field, not graphics), and thanks to the changes not only in perspective, but gameplay, well... it feels like the old "Mortal Kombat" of yore, and that's a very good thing. "Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition" comed with a fight stick that will make you feel like you are back in the arcade, dropping quarters.

Fighting games rely on two things, balance and charisma. A good fighting game is like a fast, violent version of chess. The latest version of "Mortal Kombat" may not be perfectly balanced by fighting game standards, but it is the best version in years. Fights are fluid, fast, and while some characters are clearly better suited against certain opponents, for the most part the game feels fair.

Not only do all the characters have great combos and special moves but the new energy gage brings more strategy to the game. Much like "Street Fighter 4" you can use a part of the gauge (a third) to beef up your moves. But the real kicker is when you use a full energy bar to execute an X-Ray attack, if it hits, it not only does massive damage, but you're treated to an in-round mini fatality.

And therein lies the charm. "Mortal Kombat," along with "Night Trap," is one of the major reasons we have a ratings system for games. It is violent and gory. Though in this "post-Saw" era, it's more humorous that disturbing. But the violence, the wild characters, and the cheesy story make "Mortal Kombat" more fun that one would expect.

The story mode really makes the single player game, and it is far more cinematic than most fighting games. It has a three problems, however. First, you can't skip or pause cut scenes, and there are lots of them. Second, it is mostly lacking fatalities, they need the characters to stay alive for the next scene (I think we would have bought it even if we were allowed fatalities) and third, the video cut scenes look worse than the in-game graphics. It's fun, but it could use some polish.

Polish really is what "Mortal Kombat" could use more of. I hope the next "Mortal Kombat" is more of the same, just slightly more refined. Oh, and lest I forget, Kratos is amazing in the game, he makes getting the PS3 version an easy decision.

The MK "Tournament Edition" comes not only with great extra content, but one of the finest fight sticks to date. It's heavy, has a memory foam pad, so it works on your coffee table or lap, and looks and feels more like an actual arcade cabinet controller than a home one. From the concave buttons, to the bat shaped stick, the study construction and responsive controls put the official "Street Fighter 4" and "Tekken 6" fight sticks to shame. Open it up and there's room for the game and the included USB cable (but not much else). The stick is beautiful, and it's emblazoned with "Mortal Kombat" in curious, yet classy ways. This is the kind of video game hardware that will inspire jealousy in your friends.

Mortal Kombat Fatalities - Xbox 360

For the sake of clarity, these are all of the fatalities for Mortal Kombat on the Xbox 360 (see PS3 version), also referred to as Mortal Kombat 9, or Mortal Kombat 2011, representing the year the game was released. Information on other versions of Mortal Kombat can be found within our video game cheats database using this pre-defined search.

In keeping with the series' tradition, each of the characters in Mortal Kombat have two fatalities, a stage fatality, and a babality. In addition, some characters have a third fatality, which can only be used while the character is in his or her alternate costume. Most fatalities and babalities can be activated anywhere, but keep in mind that the stage fatalities can only be performed on the following stages: Chamber of the FlameHellSubwayThe Dead PoolThe Living ForestThe Pit (Day and Night)The Street

In order for a fatality to work correctly, the correct button sequence must be pressed exactly as listed just after you hear "Finish Him" or "Finish Her," depending on who you're killing. Here are all of the Mortal Kombat Fatalities listed for each of the game's characters.

If you have additional questions you can post a comment on this blog post asking for help. In addition, if you have more information that you think would prove useful for other gamers you can post that as well. And, the video game cheats forums are always open.
